Series Zords 4

Special Editions Variants 2

My thoughts on this season:

Prehistoric giants gave way to creatures of legend. With the second season, the zord line-up changed noticeably: the original Dinozords moved into the background and were gradually replaced by the Thunderzords. Within the show, this was explained by the destruction of the old zords, but of course the real reason behind it was a relaunch of the toy line. For a lot of fans, myself included, it really felt like a turning point back then.

The Thunderzords brought a much more mystical design with them. Instead of dinosaurs, it was now fantasy creatures that dominated, like the Thunder Dragon, the Kirin, or the Pegasus. Visually they were more playful, more angular, and less "earthy" than their predecessors. At the same time, they marked the first major break in style within zord history, which is exactly what makes them so interesting in hindsight.

The Megazord idea was deliberately kept intact throughout. The Dairen'oh still followed the familiar combination principle, but thanks to the dragon it came across as much more dominant and commanding, not least because the dragon could also stand on its own as a humanoid zord. Later on, the Won Tiger was added as another zord that complemented this concept nicely. Much like the Dragon Caesar before it, it could act independently while also becoming part of larger combinations. This interplay between standalone zord and combination component gave the second season a dynamic all its own.

From a toyline perspective, all of this was reflected in the DX Thunderzords as well. They were more elaborately designed, more striking in color, and in direct comparison came across as less "realistic," but more imaginative for it. The Won Tiger in particular is still considered one of the most iconic DX models of the entire series to this day, not least because of its transformation mechanism and the presence it has on the shelf.

Looking back, the zords of the second season stand for a transitional phase. They mark the moment when Mighty Morphin Power Rangers began to move away from the pure dinosaur theme and become more experimental. That is exactly what makes them so fascinating to me, even if they often stand in the shadow of the classic Dinozords.
